Latest Updates from Our Project:
HIGHER CALLING now available! What's next...? SOLO MODE!

– Tue, Jul 09, 2024 at 05:43:29 PM
Hi everyone!
Just a very brief update to acknowledge that the HIGHER CALLING Miniature Expansion Set has indeed been unlocked and is now available to Add to any pre-order!
We updated the campaign page last night to reflect that news and to make the set available. It is as described in Update #2, but if you have any questions at all, please feel free to ask in the comments.
Please note: these will be manufactured as a second wave by the factory so that we can ship the core products together sooner. The HIGHER CALLING sets may not ship until Spring 2025, and they may require additional postage to be collected at that time. We will do our best to amortize and cover as much as possible to reduce that extra shipping for you, but be prepared just in case.
What's next, you ask?
Well, we have something very cool planned at $275k, which should be reachable by Friday… Many of you have asked about it, and we hope we haven’t been too cagey with our responses, but --
AT $275k, WE WILL UNLOCK THE SOLO PLAY RULES EXPANSION!
No Lawgiver, no problem! This 96+ page companion sourcebook to the Role-Playing Game of the PLANET OF THE APES will let you experience the fun and excitement of table-top roleplaying adventure all by yourself. Filled with Lawgiver Emulator Charts, Tables, & Adventure Decision Trees, this sourcebook will let you generate plots, problems, hazards, events, encounters, allies, rewards, twists, and entire storylines or multi-part campaigns with only some dice rolls and your imagination. Unlike other TTRPG emulators, this Solo Play Sourcebook is themed specifically for the Planet of the Apes setting and made specifically to utilize the D6MV system.
And, as a bonus, the contents of this sourcebook can be useful for LGs looking for quick plots, encounters, or adventures for use in group play!
Once unlocked, this expansion will be FREE as a digital PDF with all pledge packages. PSI and OMEGA packages will receive a printed hardcover edition for FREE. All other tiers who wish to own a print copy will also be able to grab one as an Add-on to any package.
AT $300k, THE FAUX LEATHER GORILLA DICE POUCH WILL BE ADDED FREE TO DELTA PACKAGES AND ABOVE!
Just past the Solo Play Expansion, we will unlock the faux-leather Gorilla dice pouch which will be included FREE with all orders for packages in level “Delta” and above. This black faux-leather dice bag is textured and emblazoned with the Ape Service glyph as seen on gorilla police and soldiers in the films! For all other packages, these will be available as an Add-on.
THEN, AT $350K, WE’LL UNLOCK THE NEXT MINIATURE EXPANSION SET: THE ANSA PROBE SHIP!
For an additional cost, you will be able to add a resin replica of the ANSA Probe Craft resting in a translucent blue “water” base. This scale model of the crashed command capsule fits inside the water base for display, but can be separated for painting or use in your miniature adventures. The set also includes three space-suited astronauts to scale with the “Ruins of Tomorrow” set.
Note:like the HIGHER CALLING Set, these unlocked miniature add-ons will ship in a second wave approximately 6 months after the initial order shipment. Additional shipping will apply.
$350k may seem far away, but we’ve seen some amazing things happen in the final days of a campaign!
For anyone wondering: yes, we have even more plans beyond those goals above. For us, this adventure doesn't end on Friday with the initial campaign -- there's so much more fun to be had in this universe, and we've already got Year 2 items on the drawing board...
We’re really excited to reach the next goal as the addition of Solo Rules will really open up the world to an entire audience! So please keep spreading the word so we can get there in the next 75 hours!
Soooo close to HIGHER CALLING... and more BTS!

Hi, everyone!
Well, we were admittedly waiting on this update to see if we’d hit that $250k stretch goal to unlock the HIGHER CALLING miniature addon set… We’re SO CLOSE, less than $1k away, yet like a watched pot, it will not boil. So we’re no longer watching, let it roll over shortly after this posting… we’ll post again if we have to. 😉
We did unlock the TAPESTRY MAP over the weekend! Now all pledges at the DELTA tier or higher will get one of these 12x18” printed fabric maps showing the key locations in Ape City. This amazing map by artist Moreno Paissan can be hung on your wall and used as a reference map during your own adventure campaign. Like our other Stretch Goal items, these will only be available during the campaign and will not be available at retail.
I suspect we’ll be back with another update about stretch goals VERY soon! Stay tuned!
A BUSY WEEK OF PRESS!
The word is getting out! Lots of coverage and community sharing this past week, including these great articles and podcasts…
FANBASE PRESS ran an excellent interview with Andrew Gaska about the game and the development process… give it a read here:
PART-TIME FANBOY PODCAST Interviewed not only Andrew Gaska but co-designer E. L. Thomas about the project! Take a listen:
Rick Heinz and Ian Muller over at Storytellers Forge have launched a new podcast called The ST Forge, and their first episode is dedicated to discussing the POTA RPG! Rick and Ian dig into the QuickStart for the game, looking at the art, themes, mechanics, and lore, all inspired by the franchise's first four films and subsequent novels and comic books. Find out what they think, how they’d run this game, and if they think you should buy it in this 30-ish minute episode. (Spoiler alert: the absolutely DO!)
And now, let's take another look at the rules!
WHAT ARE SRP DEFENSES?
Every character has three defenses: a Surprised Defense, a Ready Defense, and a Psyche Defense. The first two are for avoiding physical attacks, such as in combat; the third is for resisting intimidation or fear. The relevant defense sets the Difficulty Number (DN) for the attack roll.
Surprised. Your Surprised Defense applies when you don’t see an attack coming. Whether you’re being ambushed or simply stabbed in the back by a “friend,” this is your attacker’s target number.
Ready. Your Ready Defense applies when you do see an attack coming. Whether you started it or the other guy did, the higher this defense, the harder you are to hit.
Psyche. Your Psyche Defense applies whenever someone tries to bully or scare you. It can also come into play when you’re confronted with the terrifying or supernatural, such as mind-bending illusions in the Forbidden Zone.
Story Ideas for Mutants
Of all the cool character types you can play in the Official Role-Playing Game of the PLANET OF THE APES, the most intriguing and mysterious have to be the Mutants. Survivors and outcasts on this world, they are different from the more common, feral Tribal Humans in that they have retained their ability to speak, and have dedicated themselves to various pseudo-sciences and religious iconography in an effort to maintain their human identity. Nature has had its way with their evolution, however, giving rise to rare gifts, like psychic abilities, as well as disturbing curses…
MUTANT HOOKS
A tremor has collapsed some of your tunnels! Worse yet, some ventilation shafts that feed fresh air from above to your people are blocked. Can your Mutant PCs find and break into an ancient vault that is said to hold explosives so the rubble can be cleared and fresh airflow restored? Also, can you determine the source of the tremor—be it ape-made or an act of the Holy Bomb?
You are all young Mutants PCs, and it is a time of sacred pilgrimage. Each of you must make the journey to a site of holy radiation and return with irradiated slag that will mark your next passage in life. Will you make this a competition, or will you all work together to accomplish each of your goals? Can you find the slag that calls to you so your gifts might be enhanced and your journey toward adulthood can be complete?
Ape scouts have found one of the old subway tunnels that lead to your underground home. Can your Mutant PCs drive off the interlopers without giving them cause to explore further and not reveal the existence of your kind?

Quirks, Abilities, Astro-naut hooks, and MORE!

– Sat, Jul 06, 2024 at 04:43:50 PM
Hi, everyone!
Here we are with less than a week to go! We’re SO CLOSE to unlocking the Map Tapestry Stretch Goal, which also puts us only $5k away from unlocking the HIGHER CALLING Miniature Add-on Set! The last week of a campaign is always exciting to see how many followers will decide to join the party and become backers, and we’ve still got a lot in store for these final 6 days!
SYSTEM FEATURES
We’ve been asked by various fans and folks what makes the D6MV System unique in the realm of Role-Playing Games, and the answers often focus on different things: the simplicity of the system, the variety of ways to play, the streamlined stats and combat, etc, etc. We’ve already touched on Mementos, and today we want to focus on two features that really stand out, Quirks and Remarkable Abilities.
QUIRKS
Many apes have serious personality quirks that are balanced with enhanced physical or intellectual abilities, making them ripe for dramatic roleplay. These Quirks have been designed to add flavor to your gaming table, giving inexperienced or timid players and apes alike a guide for role-playing. While Quirks are optional, taking one lets you choose a Remarkable Ability, a specific way of bending the rules in your favor.
REMARKABLE ABILITIES
An ape who talks! Every ape has got a gift for something—and the most gifted apes are often the most troubled. If your character has a Quirk, you can also choose a Remarkable Ability from the list below. If none of them is what you’re looking for, work with the LG to come up with your own by using these as a guide. If you choose not to take a Quirk, you can still gain a Remarkable Ability for the initial cost of 10 XP. You’ll just have to play a few adventures before getting one.
We’ll look at another feature, SRP Defenses, in the next update.
Story ideas for Astro-nauts
Are you looking forward to playing a time-lost astronaut thrust into a world turned upside-down? Astronauts (or “Astro-nauts” as they are known on the Planet) are just one type of character experience you and your fellow gamers can enjoy. Here are just a few story ideas for Astro-naut character campaigns…
ASTRO-NAUT HOOKS
Time is your foe. Every day seems to repeat the same events and you die. You then awaken and start the day over in a perpetual loop. Each time, you remember what happened before. Can your Asto-naut PCs solve the problem that is keeping you trapped on the same day?
You awaken in your sleep pods as alarm klaxons sound and the ship's power fluctuates as you hurtle through space. To your horror, you have only been asleep for four hours into your journey. Can you fix the malfunctioning ship system quickly enough before your journey is ended permanently?
You managed to survive the journey—that ended in a crash—only to discover apes rule and hunt humans for sport. Thus far you and your crew of Astro-naut PCs have managed to stay one step ahead of death, but you are out of supplies. Rumors tell of a flying machine graveyard past the Forbidden ZOne that just may be the key to getting home. But first, you need to acquire food, water, and weapons if there is any hope of continued survival—let alone find a way back to your own time. Can you sneak into an ape settlement and steal what you need without getting caught?
A CONVERSATION WITH DARK ORB

Hi, everyone!
Happy 4th! We’re enjoying BBQ and fireworks in the US, and hopefully you have something spectacular planned as well! We still have so much more to share about this game, so here’s another installment of “Inside the POTA RPG”!
AN INFINITE HIGHWAY OF INFINITE POSSIBILITIES
Project Lead Andrew E.C. Gaska has posted his Canon of the Planet of the Apes Source list on roguereviewer.wordpress.com! Just as he did for ALIEN, Drew has compiled the sources that were curated during his role as a freelance franchise consultant for an internal POTA bible at 20th Century Studios circa 2016-2018. These sources and his previous POTA novel work were then used when setting up the RPG. Check it out!
Adventures on the Planet of the Apes offer a few distinct approaches to gameplay. Just like the source material, the types of stories that can be told in the Role-Playing Game of the PLANET OF THE APES cover the spectrum, from poignant tales of morality and the struggles for quality of life to full-throttle action and adventure.
THEMATIC MODE
Planet of the Apes is a grim reminder of the depths humankind can sink to. It’s a psychological examination of character that holds a satirical mirror up to our world and offers socio-political commentary under the guise of science fiction action. At its best, POTA holds nothing back when tackling themes of creed, bigotry, and humanity’s penchant for self-destruction.
Just like the original film, The Role-Playing Game of the PLANET OF THE APES embraces a somber tone of survival and moody self-reflection. As such, balance at the table is required. This is reflected in what we call Thematic Mode.
An RPGPOTA session can reflect the spirit of the first four films. Mystery, fear, action, an investigation of important issues, wry social commentary and puns—escalating threats—and an emotionally charged but brutal ending followed by an unlikely sequel. What follows are themes you might have to face in a Thematic POTA adventure. How to use them directly is explained in detail in the Core Rulebook.
Bigotry.
Environmentalism.
Self-destruction.
Satire.
Social-political Commentary.
Animal Rights.
A group’s LAWGIVER (LG) will offer Players tips on keeping things from going overboard. LGs, make sure your group is comfortable tackling sociopolitical and psychological adventures in their tabletop gaming. If not, there is always “Monkeys on Horseback” mode…
MONKEYS ON HORSEBACK MODE
You can glaze over the sociopolitical undercurrent of Planet of the Apes and play the RPGPOTA as a straight-out action-adventure game. There are plenty of dangers and conflicting factions to introduce a wide degree of pure adrenaline survival action. And the D6MV System makes fast-paced combat quick and easy to role-play.
While the full Planet of the Apes experience may include thematic elements, the most important thing is that no one is left feeling uncomfortable at your game table.
Story ideas for Tribal Human characters
There are many different types of characters you can play in the RPG of POTA, including tribal, non-literate humans who are left to run wild under Ape oppression. These characters face an array of unique challenges, not the least of which is their inability to speak! Players will have to communicate using non-verbal cues and gestures, just like in the movies!
TRIBAL HUMAN HOOKS
Ape hunters have been sighted and a pack of dangerous predators prowl nearby. Can your Tribal Human PCs scout out and then lead your family group to safety or will you fall prey to the dangers stalking you?
The old healer is missing—having disappeared near the river. Your group must move soon but they do not want to just abandon the beloved healer. Your Tribal Human PCs are sent to try and find what has befallen the healer. Can you make your group whole, or will you be forced to move on without the old one?
You awaken, lungs and eyes burning and find flames all about you. A wildfire is consuming the forest where you have been living. Can your Tribal Human PCs gather all your family and get them to safety before all hope is turned to ash? And who are the strange shadows watching your home burn?
Team Spotlights:
Today we’ll take a look at the 3D artists who sculpted our amazing miniature sets!
David Arberas and Daniel Fernández-Truchaud, 3D Artists
David and Daniel worked on all of the miniatures that are included in the core RUINS OF TOMORROW Miniatures Set.
David Arberas was blown away by Zbrush and the endless possibilities of digital sculpture, so he fulfilled a longtime dream when he was able to study VFX. He has worked on commercials, movies, video games, and in the tabletop games industry, passionately collaborating on projects like Zombicide, Game of Thrones, Marvel United, Carbon Grey RPG, and Deep Rock Galactic.
In a world dominated by apes, Daniel Fernández-Truchaud is a Spanish digital sculptor who works on creating figures for board games such as Song of Fire and Ice, Marvel United, and Zombicide. His art is his only weapon to fight against simian oppression and keep the flame of humanity alive.
Kieran Russell, 3D Artist
Kieran Russell is a 3D Sculptor from Scotland. He has been creating miniatures for as long as he can remember (mostly due to bad weather) and is excited to be part of Team Simian. “Sculpting is my passion and it is a true honour to be working on these damn dirty apes!”
Kieran sculpted all of our bonus stretch goal miniature add-ons, including the already-unlocked Statue of Liberty Dice Tower Set and the upcoming “Higher Calling” Set. We’re looking forward to unlocking that and more all so they can be seen out in the wild!
We’ve got plenty more in store for the days ahead… we’re almost in the final week! We hope everyone (in the US) has a wonderful 4th of July holiday and we’ll be back shortly with more inside info!
Coin Unlocked! More Press links! A look inside the ANSA book! And more!

Hi, everyone!
Happy Monday! We’re back with some more good news:
2” Simian “Gridgen” Coin Memento Stretch Goal has been unlocked!
Now, all physically shipping pre-orders will include our next Live Action Memento — a 2” gunmetal “Gridgen” coin, a replica of the currency used in Ape City. These coins can be used in gameplay as a Memenot as described in Update #3. This collectible item will only be available through this Kickstarter pre-order campaign and will not be available at retail!
Up Next: Tapestry Map of Ape City and the next miniature addon set – “Higher Calling”!
We have so many plans after that next miniature add-on set – how much we can reveal and unlock is up to YOU! One backer had a very clever way to help us reach these stretch goals faster: you can increase your current pledge here on Kickstarter with an estimate of what you expect your shipping might come to.Every penny pledged on Kickstarter will be carried into the Backerkit Pledge Manager after the campaign, so any extra funds added in Kickstarter will be there in Backerkit to cover any balance due (such as shipping, or additional Add-ons you may choose to add post-campaign). So, for example, if you think your shipping cost might be $35, you can add that to your current pledge amount so that it is waiting for you as pre-paid credit in Backerkit! Of course, if your final Backerkit total due turns out to be less than the credit you paid, we will happily refund you any balance.
That is, admittedly, a crafty way to help us reach more stretch goals, but it is a valid strategy! 😎

We’re not sure what happened to these first two links in the original update, but here they are again, along with a new one, all worth checking out!
Thanks to Tom Elliot for the info-cast! If you’re looking for more interesting podcast material, be sure to check out his Twilight Zone Podcast as well!
You blew it up! Ah, damn you! God damn you all to hell! Matthew interviews Andrew E.C. Gaska about the Planet of the Apes RPG Kickstarter starting at time-index 00.49.28.
NEW PODCAST!
Kritfayleinterviewed Creative Lead Andrew E.C. Gaska about the game for nearly 2 hours!
WHAT’S IN THE ANSA SOURCEBOOK?
The core rulebook gives you everything you need to play in a world of your making in the late 40th century. The ANSA Files sourcebook gives you the final details to make that world the same as the one from the films.
You can receive your astronaut training before blasting off into space and landing in an ape-run future. You can also live in the world of the 1970s — where apes from the future have arrived with a dark secret about our fate (as depicted in Escapefrom the Planet Apes). You can also live in the world of the Conquest of the Planet Apes where humanity is on the tipping point and apes are ready to rebel, as well as going past that point into the aftermath we see in Battle for the Planet Apes.
Then, all of the particulars needed to populate Ape City with the likes of Dr. Zaius, Dr. Cornelius, and General Ursus. Dozens of characters from the films are included to make your 40th century complete.
As a final bonus, there’s a section on jumping lanes of the Infinite Highway. Suggested by the 3rd and 5th films of the original saga is the concept of time being an infinite highway with an infinite number of lanes. Change your lane and you change your destiny. The game leans into this in order to allow every table’s POTA game to be a different lane of the highway. This means every game campaign is canon to its own lane of time!
Need some story ideas? We’ve got TONS for you…
Lots of fans have asked us exactly what you can do within the setting of the POTA RPG. The truth is that the Planet of the Apes is more expansive than most people realize. Almost any kind of story can be adapted to the setting, from adventure stories to murder mysteries, from medieval myths to even westerns! The ANSA book even allows you to play in various time periods other than the widely familiar post-apocalyptic ape setting. Here are just a few adventure hooks, which we’ll expand upon in upcoming updates before the end of the campaign. This is only a sampling of what you can do on a planet-turned-ape!
APE HOOKS
Some foul illness is sweeping through Ape City, and the only cure is a rare herb that grows only in the mountains at the snowline. Can your ape PCs make the arduous climb, gather the herb, and get back before the illness becomes a true epidemic?
Strange artifacts — metal boxes with levers, and iron ladders leading to metal-covered hatches were found in an odd, perfectly round cave near the river. A renowned scientist has chosen your Ape PCs to investigate and discover all you can about this rare find.
After a poor harvest ravaged by humans, the council has voted to send a team in search of greener pastures beyond the Forbidden Zone. Like the famous Lewis and Ape expedition, your caravan has been tasked with opening up this new frontier. What dangers await as you blaze a trail across the Forbidden Zone?
Team Spotlights:
Let’s take a look at some more contributing artists involved in this project!
Shane Molina, technical artist/designer
Shane Molina of Hawaiian Mako Designs is one of the key hardware artists on the project. Molina's art can be found all over this project, as he is our master of weapons, vehicles, equipment, and so much more!
Shane started drawing as a young child, inspired by the world around him and many pop-culture films. Along with many of his own concepts and passion projects, he is proud to have been an illustrator for Star Wars Topps. You can see his latest published work in the graphic novel "The Black Box Chronicles" by Horrible Future and Magnetic Press. He lives in Hilo, Hawaii with his wife Holly and five children. Molina is responsible for the weapon illustrations, planes, and spaceship cutaways in the RPG!
Chandra Free, Artist
Chandra Free is the creator of The God Machine graphic novel and webcomic series, and co-founder of Machina Corpse comics imprint. Her illustrations can be found in books like John Carpenter’s Tales For A Halloween Night, Fraggle Rock, and Graphic Canon. She has also worked on the TTRPG book Carbon Grey. Her art is featured throughout the various pre-order items, including many of our awesome backgrounds in the Core Rulebook and ANSA Files sourcebook, as well as the hex maps included in the Into the Forbidden Zone Campaign Boxed Set. She also worked on two of the archetypes, including everyone's favorite awkward gorilla kid (pictured above).
Morena Paissan, artist
Moreno Paissan is an Italian freelance cartographer for Free League Publishing, Acheron Games, Tambu, Officina Meningi, Horrible Guild, and many others. Currently in the sector they work in illustration together with partner and collaborator Angela Gubert. Together they make maps and cartographies for board games, card games, novels, book games and role-playing games. Paissan made our beautiful Ape City map that will be added to all DELTA packages and above once we hit $245k. We can't wait for you all to have this intricate guide to Ape City!
That’s all for now, but we have a lot more coming up… less than 2 weeks left in the campaign! Please spread the word so we can bring as much POTA goodness to you as possible!
